Factors leading to the formation of Muslim League and its objectives.

Brief mention of the significance of the Lucknow Pact – 1916

❖ Factors leading to the formation of Muslim League:

➢ Loss of Sovereignty by Mughal Rulers: The British established their

supremacy in India after dethroning the Mughal rulers, who were

followers of Islam. Therefore, Muslims became bitter enemies of the

British.

➢ British Policy of Divide and Rule: The unity between the Hindus and the

Muslims was a threat to the British rule in India. Thus, to check the

growth of nationalism in India and to encourage communist and

separatist tendencies in Indian politics they followed the policy of ‘Divide

and Rule’.

➢ Relative Backwardness of the Muslim Community in Education, Trade

and Industry: As the Muslims were backward in education, trade &

industry, it also led to communal and separatist tendencies.

➢ Role Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan: Sayyad Ahmad Khan was a great

educationist and a social reformer.

▪ He founded the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental (MAO) College at

Aligarh which had both Hindu and Muslim patron.

▪ Under the influence of Principal Beck of MAO college, he laid the

foundation of the Muslim Communalism by declaring that the

political interests of the Hindus and Muslims were different.

➢ Erroneous Interpretation of History: History was taught in schools in

such a manner that it developed separatist attitude among the Hindus

and Muslims.

➢ Rise of Assertive Nationalism: Certain actions of the Aggressive

nationalists as well as some of their speeches and writings annoyed

some of the Indians.

➢ Economic Backwardness of the Country: Due to British colonial policies,

India lacked modern industrial development; and there was acute

unemployment for the educated Indians. As a result, there was fierce

competition among the youth to secure the few available jobs. This led

to a demand for the reservation of jobs
